For 'The Future of Healthcare in the Face of Growing Demand' I invited my close friend, roommate and Medical IT Consultant Jos Vliegenthart to hold a presentation on a possible future of healthcare.
During lengthy discussions at home about the integration of software in healthcare and in agriculture, Jos and I imagined the concept of 'clustered healthcare.' In clustered healthcare doctors treat his or her patients in categories with the help of individually gathered data. The idea of clustered healthcare is inspired by the agricultural models used in Individual Livestock Farming (ILF). ILF enables a farmer to hold larger and larger groups of animals through the use of datasets. The presentation ends with a promotional video showcasing the use of database software in agriculture. 'The Brigade’ is a performance lecture built around autobiographical memories of milk consumption. The near to religious songs about drinking milk, the ritualistic opening of the packages and milk-induced sleeping patterns in childhood are juxtaposed with the overproduction of milk and commercialisation after the Second World War.
Examples of royal milk parades and a 500,000 man strong dairy-funded paramilitary organisation help place the personal narratives in a historical and political context. Ultimately, it sketches an image of how the Dutch national identity and our precious childhood was a carefully crafted blueprint; designed and executed by the dairy industry. Romantic images and values of the past are pasted and recycled into futuristic images of today. The past and present seem to coexist in the food industry, where traditional images and nostalgia is used to sell high-tech machinery and food products, both for food producers and consumers.
'Are you ready for the future, astronaut?' is an exploration of the language and arguments used in the Dutch Dairy-industry. It tells the story of an old-fashioned farmer, who is modernising his company with the help of new technologies, leading him to a more fulfilled life. The second part of the film consists of material shot on a modern day farm in the Netherlands, accompanied by an exhilarating soundtrack. Video, 10:20 minutes. |

'Agrarian Entrepreneur' is a series of ten photographs taken at different locations in the Dutch dairy industry. Ranging from empty barns from the previous generation of farmers to high-tech producers of automated production lines. This series aims to portray how the old romantic idea of the farmer is still present in our landscape and has its function in the industry itself. On the other hand, it shows how optimisation, automation and efficiency is the everyday reality of the dairy industry, where there is little space for nostalgia and romanticism.
The photographs are accompanied by quotes taken from interviews with family members, farmers, government officials and brochures from the industry. Series of 10 photographs, b&w 6x6. 2015 Agrarian Entrepreneur is part of the Publishing class V: Inland publication. Published by Casco as part of the Co-op academy of the Dutch Art Institute, led by Sanne Oorthuizen (Casco) and Fernando García-Dory. |

‘Alongside legends’ is a short film made in collaboration with Wendy Brugman. It tells the story of two travellers who arrive at a strange city. Since a while, new types of inhabitants have started to emerge in the city. These newcomers are not like the original inhabitants but instead are made from concrete and marble. In this documentary, both groups contemplate on their role in this strange city: the new inhabitants feel they have a right to live in this city since they once had helped built it. While the original inhabitants are tired of listening to the newcomers’ stories of the past and are mainly concerned with looking forward.
‘Alongside legends’ ponders on the pressing or empowering function of historical figures in day-to-day life. Video, 06:15 minutes. 2015. 'Alongside Legends' is made possible by grants from the Municipality of Utrecht and the European Cultural Foundation. |

'Touching Land' is a collaborative film made by Wendy Brugman and Joost Mellink. In this short film the visual comparisons and differences between the United States and the Netherlands are researched in an associative manner. The distances in time and space are central to the film and occasionally overlap. Touristic images are a recurring theme, eventually asking questioning the role of touristic cliches and how we perceive these cliches back in our home country.
Dual channel video. 10:00 minutes. 2012. Nominated for TENT Academy awards. In collaboration with Wendy Brugman |
